Many "JDM" type programmers are available all over the internet. As it uses the serial port it can't be used in the latest PC's and Laptops that only have USB ports. PicKit2 is a reliable and comfortable programmer that uses USB port. It supports many EEPROM's and PIC microcontrollers. Microchip updates the software and firmware regularly to support newer PIC's. PicKit2 can be used with MPLAB and also with a standalone GUI.
Here a simplified PicKit2 - Lite is designed with zif socket board. It can be used to program 8,14,18,28,40 pin controllers easily as well as I2C EEPROM's.
